Editorial examples and prices may be outdated. A protocol or ecosystem label does not confirm every feature. Check the exact device’s current documentation and reviewed connection paths. Specific corrections and references are noted below.
A smart plug can add switching or monitoring to a compatible appliance without changing fixed wiring. It is not suitable for every appliance. Check regional voltage, plug type, load ratings, and both manufacturers’ instructions before use.
Compare energy monitoring, connection methods, outdoor suitability, outlet control, and ecosystem support for the exact variant.
The one question that matters most: do you need Apple Home?
Choose a plug with a documented connection to your intended ecosystem. Check the exact variant and whether it uses HomeKit, Matter, or a bridge. A brand name is not enough, and Matter is not the only possible Apple Home route. Confirm controller and transport requirements before buying.
Energy monitoring: more useful than it sounds
Energy monitoring can help you understand compatible appliances’ consumption or create automations from reported readings. Check which measurements the chosen integration actually exposes.
Do not use an ordinary smart plug to monitor an EV charger or high-load appliance merely because the headline amperage looks sufficient. For electric space heaters, CPSC advises plugging directly into a wall outlet. Use suitable metering equipment and follow appliance instructions.
The best plug for Home Assistant
The Shelly Plug S Plus ($13.99) is the HA community's favorite. It has a full local API (HTTP, MQTT, WebSockets), real-time energy monitoring, and works entirely without cloud. You can even write scripts that run directly on the device. The Kasa KP115 and KP125M are also excellent HA choices via the Kasa local LAN integration.
Indoor vs outdoor plugs
Choose the exact product and installation method rated for the location, temperature, moisture exposure, and load. Follow the manufacturer’s outdoor installation instructions; an IP number alone is not a complete installation approval. Outlet count and independent control vary by model.
Power strips vs individual plugs
A power strip can place several controllable outlets together; an individual plug suits a single location. Check which outlets and USB ports are independently controlled, the total load limit, and ecosystem support for the exact regional model. Not every port on a smart strip is individually switchable.

Do smart plugs work with any outlet?
No. Voltage, plug and socket type, earthing, physical fit, and load limits depend on the regional variant. Check both the plug and appliance instructions.
Can a smart plug control a lamp that's already off?
No. A smart plug controls power to the outlet. If the lamp's physical switch is off, the smart plug can't turn it on. Use plugs with devices that stay in the "on" position — lamps with pull chains, fans with wall switches left in the on position, etc.
Will a smart plug work with high-wattage appliances?
Do not decide from a headline amp rating alone. Check the exact regional device, load type, and appliance instructions. Do not use this guide to select a smart plug for a space heater or EV charger; CPSC advises electric space heaters be plugged directly into a wall outlet.
Do smart plugs work without internet?
Depends on the plug. Matter plugs (Kasa KP125M, Tapo P125M, etc.) work locally even without internet once paired. Most non-Matter Wi-Fi plugs require cloud servers for remote control but still work on local schedules. Shelly plugs with local API work entirely without internet.
What's the difference between Kasa and Tapo?
Both are made by TP-Link but are separate product lines with separate apps. Kasa is the older, more established brand with broader community support. Tapo is newer and has been faster to adopt Matter. You cannot mix them in the same app.
